Destination: Sevilla, Spain

Sevilla is a magnificent city that encaptures all the elegance, class and culture of southern Spain.

The city is over 2,000 years old, dating back to Roman time and still has much of its history intact- including the Cathedral of Sevilla that was built between 1400-1500 and remnants of the old city walls. Additionally, the Cathedral of Sevilla houses the Tomb of Christopher Columbus.

Sevilla can be a week-long vacation in itself as you'll never be at a loss for trendy tapas bars in the University district, and the historical culture that embodies the city will entrance you.

The Plaza de Espana (built in 1929) is a must see for it's architectural brilliance and, as magnificent as it is, it was one of the filming locations for the Star Wars movies (I believe Episode II).

Just about every street corner in the city hosts its own cafe where you can enjoy the typical 'Cafe con Leche', 'Tinto con Limon', a refreshing Cruzcampo or (VFC's favorite) a small glas off Manzanilla.

As always, I suggest buying a tourist book that describes the sights that you witness, and definitely pay they extra money for a guided tour of the historical monuments and sights.

You can easilty spend your days just walking through the city, but I also suggest the tour bus because you're able to get off at a sight of interest and then get back on with the same ticket, all day long.

Sevilla, located on the River Guadalquivir, is also a perfect home base for travelling around Andalucia. The old city of Cadiz is a short ride away and the entire Costa de la Luz (including the Rock of Gibraltar) is easily accessible.

I'll admit that Sevilla is no Rome, but it is one of those cities that you have to 'experience', not just visit. The people are friendly, so get off the beating path and find a nice local cafe and enjoy the Spanish tapas as the locals do.

You won't be disappointed with Sevilla, a true destination for anyone who loves Spanish history, culture or just a good time.

On another note, I never could understand why Sevilla is called Seville in English. Is it that hard to say Sevilla? I don't get it.
